Robinhood’s referral offer headlines a big number: up to $15,000 in reward stock a year. That figure is real, it’s on Robinhood’s own site, and almost nobody will ever see it.
Here’s why. The $15,000 isn’t a payout for one referral. It’s the ceiling on a five-step ladder, and you only reach the top by getting 200 people to open a Robinhood account, link a funding source and actually put money in. Every step below that pays a lot less.
What you’ll get for your first successful referral is $50 in stock. That’s the number to plan around.

In this article, we’ll lay out the whole ladder, explain what your friend gets, and cover what counts as a referral in the first place. If you’re the one being invited, the SEC’s investor bulletin on opening a brokerage account is a good five minutes before you sign anything.

The full referral ladder
Robinhood calls these milestone rewards, and that word is doing real work. The rewards are cumulative: you collect each one as you cross it, and they add up to exactly $15,000 at the top.
| Successful invites | Milestone reward | Running total |
|---|---|---|
| 1 friend | $50 of stock | $50 |
| 3 friends | $150 of stock | $200 |
| 10 friends | $800 of stock | $1,000 |
| 50 friends | $4,000 of stock | $5,000 |
| 200 friends | $10,000 of stock | $15,000 |

Read down that table and you’ll spot the catch. You get paid at friend 1 and again at friend 3, so friend number 2 earns you nothing on its own. The same is true of friends 4 through 9, and 11 through 49. The money arrives in jumps, not per person.
The cap is annual, not lifetime. Robinhood’s wording is that you can earn up to a total of $15,000 in reward stock per year, and that the $15,000 is a combined ceiling across all its offers in the same calendar year.

What counts as a successful referral
This is where the arithmetic usually falls apart. A signup on its own does nothing. In Robinhood’s own words, the person you invite has to open a new brokerage account, link a valid external funding source, and initiate a qualifying deposit.
All three, or it doesn’t count. Sending someone a link and watching them download the app gets you to none of the milestones above.

What your friend gets, and why it’s a different number
Both sides earn something, but not the same thing, and this trips people up constantly.
The milestone ladder above is what you get as the referrer. The person you invited gets Robinhood’s standard sign-up reward instead: a free share of stock worth somewhere between $5 and $200, which they pick from a list of 26 companies.
Be realistic about that range. Robinhood publishes the distribution, and it says roughly 99% of participants receive $5, about 0.9% receive $10, and about 0.1% receive $200. Your friend is getting five dollars, in all likelihood. Tell them that up front and nobody’s disappointed later.

There are conditions on the sign-up reward too. It’s for a first taxable, self-directed individual brokerage account, the account has to be approved, and a bank account or debit card has to be linked. The reward has to be claimed within 60 days or it expires. Once claimed, it’s sellable after three trading days and the proceeds are locked for 30.

Is chasing the referral money a good idea?
For most people, no, and it’s worth being straight about why.
Ten successful referrals gets you $1,000 of stock. That’s a genuinely good return for sending some messages. But ten successful referrals means ten separate people who each open a brokerage account and deposit their own money because you asked them to. That’s a lot to ask, and it’s worth remembering what you’re asking them to do.
Investing carries risk. The money your friend deposits can lose value, and a reward share doesn’t change that. Robinhood is a real broker with real market exposure, not a cashback scheme. If you wouldn’t recommend it to someone without the $50 attached, don’t recommend it with the $50 attached.
Treat the first $50 as a nice extra on a recommendation you were going to make anyway. Treat the $15,000 as marketing.

What the account itself gets you
If you’re opening an account because of this offer, the offer shouldn’t be the reason you stay. Commission-free trading on stocks and ETFs is the core of it. There are retirement accounts with a match, a cash sweep for uninvested money, and access to new listings.
Robinhood Gold sits on top at $5 a month, with a higher IRA match and a better cash rate. The first 30 days are free. Gold is a separate decision from any of the reward stock, and it’s one you can make later.

Offers change, and this one replaced a different referral programme earlier this year. Check the current terms on Robinhood’s own site before you start inviting anyone, and check them again if you’re still going in six months.
FAQs
The $15,000 is a real annual ceiling, but it takes 200 successful referrals to reach. Each referred person has to open a brokerage account, link a funding source and make a qualifying deposit. Your first successful referral pays $50 of stock.
There is no flat per-referral rate. Robinhood pays at milestones: $50 at one friend, $150 at three, $800 at ten, $4,000 at fifty and $10,000 at two hundred. The rewards are cumulative, so friends that fall between milestones do not pay on their own.
They get Robinhood’s standard sign-up reward, not a milestone payment. That is a share of stock worth between $5 and $200, chosen from a list of 26 companies. Robinhood’s own published distribution says roughly 99% of participants receive $5.
No. A signup alone earns nothing. Robinhood requires the referred person to open a new brokerage account, link a valid external funding source and initiate a qualifying deposit before the referral counts toward a milestone.
Per year. Robinhood states you can earn up to a total of $15,000 in reward stock per year, and that the ceiling is combined across all its offers in the same calendar year, so a sign-up reward counts toward it rather than adding to it.
