Wal-Mart Stores (WMT) In DVD Price War

Walmart Stores (NYSE: WMT) closed yesterday at $51.28. So far the stock has hit a 52-week low of $46.25 and 52-week high of $59.23. Walmart Stores stock has been showing support around 50.18 and resistance in the 51.90 range. Technical indicators for the stock are Bullish and S&P gives WMT a very positive 5 STAR (out of 5) strong buy rating. WMT appears on the Investors Observer Analysts Favorites list. For a hedged play on this stock, look at a Mar '10 47.50 covered call (WMT CW) for a net debit in the $46.48 area. That is also the break even stock price for this trade. This covered call has a 134 day duration, provides 9.36% downside protection and a 2.19% assigned return rate for a 5.98% annualized return rate (comparison purposes only). A lower cost hedged play for this stock would use a longer term call option in place of the covered call stock purchase. To use this strategy look at going long the WMT Jan '11 30 Call (VWT AF) and selling the Mar '10 47.50 call (WMT CW) for a $16.40 debit. The trade has a 134 day life and would provide 9.52% downside protection and a 6.71% assigned return rate for an 18.00% annualized return rate (for comparison purposes only). Walmart Stores has a current annual dividend yield of 2.18%.

if WM is indeed in a DVD price war, I'd love to be able to buy DVDs in the $2.50-3.75 price range.

Currently, one can buy DVDs for $5 of most movies that are 2+ years old.

Agreed. Cheaper DVD's might make me buy them instead of rent them. New ones at $15-$20, rent for $1 a night, or use on a Netflix account...

I agree, if we can get dvds cheaper, then we can all benefit and save money.

Wal-Mart has some cheap tv boxed sets, but those are the older ones.  It would be nice to not have to wait until the price drops before buying dvds or boxed sets.  Usually that takes months to a year or on a special occasion before the price drops.

now that Sony PS3 has a deal with Netflix to stream their movies that are available, I plan on buying the PS3 sometime during the holiday shopping season, hoping for a nice discount on Black Friday.

I can't wait to see how my regular dvds look on a Blu-ray player

I have heard mostly that blu-ray are on the out.  Most are going to HD.

I wish we could just use one and get it over with, instead of guessing.
