WASILLA, Alaska - Sarah Palin announced Friday she plans to resign as governor of Alaska in a few weeks, saying she will try to "affect positive change" from outside government.

Palin, the Republican vice presidential candidate in 2008, made the announcement at a press conference Friday.

She said the decision has been "in the works" for a while and comes after "prayer and consideration."

She is handing the reins over to Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell, who will be sworn in on July 25. Parnell and most of Palin's cabinet were present at the announcement.

"We know we can affect positive change outside government at this moment in time on another scale and actually make a difference," she said, adding that politics had become a "superficial, wasteful bloodsport."

Some have speculated in the past that Palin may be interested in running for president in 2012, but she did not mention running for another office.

Palin was elected Alaska's youngest and first woman governor in 2006 at age 42. She was the surprise pick of Arizona Sen. John McCain as running mate in the 2008 presidential election.

She was only the second woman to appear on a major party presidential ticket — Democrat Geraldine Ferraro was the first when she ran unsuccessfully for vice president with Walter Mondale in 1984.

There has been plenty of commentary on this site about Obama and his administration.  What's everyone thinking about Mrs. Palin?  Is she the future?

If she's the future, we're in for a lot of trouble. She doesn't have the training nor the experience to represent the country.

j828 clearly meant Palin...She has once again proven she is not fit for Office...Instead of sticking it out and actually trying to achieve positive change for Alaska...She skips out to persue own ambitions leaving someone else to clean up the mess....Or it is probably even worse than that....Hope it does not involve animals or incest....

Iceman why you got to be like that?  That is not necessary.  Why would you degrade my service to this country?  I have nothing to prove to you or anyone else.  How dare you!  Is that all you guys got to do is try to throw insults...Come on you are smarter than that...I take you to be an intelligent person who firmly believes the opposite of me on many issues...That is a good thing...I want you opinions on the issues but do not need or want your insults...It does not help the debate and only makes you look small...So please lets debate the issues but there is no reason for personal attacks...

She is a Public Personality...And I did not accuse her of anything...I was merely pointing out that with Politicians I never cease to be amazed at the things they do...Seems like these are about the only things left...

Oh Yes...That was a cheap shot at Palin...Yes...It was a Joke!...

It seems that each time one of these Politicians confess to something it just has to top the last one and there just ain't much left...Between the two sides they have covered just about everything but these last two...Now as yet we don't know what is going on...But I bet within a couple of days we here of some sort of discretion that made her take this move...either that or Financial Gain...ya know Live with Sarah Palin....lol...she could probably make a fortune and that is really probably where her talents really lay...

It's funny that people want to dig at politicians that have done "right" by their constituents. The gov of Calif. would kill for Alaska's balance sheet.

Yeah, she is not fit for office as RB says!

right on survey bob. palin turn the alaska budget around. how did she do it ?  not by throwing trillions of dollars away. she cut taxes, wasteful spending and by not worring about stepping on toes of people from either party.

Right petergun1962. And it is so funny that the "other side" vilifies her for doing the kind of job you want your politicians to do for you.

    Terribly blatant hypocrisy. (and fear)

Here is a Great idea...Run Newt/Palin as your ticket in the next election...That way we can finally be done with both of them....
