Three minutes to spare Rich?  You must like cutting it close.

    Good luck tomorrow.

Kelly- GLBL is down 2.47% in after hours trading. You may have been too greedy with this pick.

Greed has a way to limit your portfolio.

Agreed - What's the old saying.....Bulls make money, Bears make money, but Pigs get slaughtered.  Don't be a pig.  Take some profits off the table (Am I starting to sound like Cramer?)

The stock screening that I do each day is based on info available at the end of normal trading hours.  I'm not accounting for after-hours activity.  To win a simple game like this you would obviously take into account all available info and simply pick stocks that are poised for a big pop at the open.  I would prefer to look for stocks that appear to be strong companies and that I would consider holding for a while.  In the long run they should be able to beat the market (and hopefully any competition on here).

     Good luck trading today.

Yea, I don't expect those picks to really move today. I actually would run with FTR still and two other picks. This friendly competition has encouraged me to  spend a little time revising my main screener to detect the point where a stock has the most potential for a possible pop. Maybe I'll have some better picks for tomorrow's run. Good luck, anyways, I know I'll need it for this competition.

The Eagles take an early lead in day two.  I screwed up.  I shouldn't have both an oil play and a coal play at the same time, especially with the big runup in energy lately.

The day's just started.  Time for a rally.

some early lead.... 2 down and 1 up. lol I'll take it, but the day isn't over yet. If I had it go again, the following would have been my picks, based on the reformulation of my intraday/end-of-day screen.

mblx, mxgl and pkoh. Again, these would have been based on the technical alignment of the MACD(3,8,13), Stochastic Fast over Stochastic Slow, RSI, and Accumulation/Distribution. I have this screen running throughout the day and I just drop tickers in about once every hour to see what else pops into my watchlist. These picks seem good, I may have some better ones at today's close.

Looks like some action there - but, would you buy them in real life?  How long (real life) would you expect to hold them?

I have actually put on trades for OREX and COIN real life, OREX cost basis $3.75 on 1000 shares, sold off on the the way up in quaters (down to my last quarter portion of the position which I am holding) , and I just put on COIN last week for a cost basis of $1.50 on 500 shares. Haven't sold yet, plan to start selling at least half of the position on once it hits $2.50.

I'm putting in early picks today for 6/3/09.

COV, COIN, and JAKK no explanations other than technicals look good for a possible pop. We'll see if last night's homework revision pays off.

Looks like you took round two today.  I'll have my picks either in a couple hours or right before the cutoff tonight.

Since Barboni did not get back to me on what team he wishes to be on and Benhilo's picks were way too late to be included today, it was just the Monkeys and Eagles again today.  The rankings for today ending up in a tie as shown:

    Team Ticker Change Points

    Monkeys HD Up 1.41% 3
    Eagles STZ Up 0.91% 2
    Eagles FTR No Change 1
    Monkeys ANR Down 3.03% -1
    Monkeys GLBL Down 1.95% -2
    Eagles SWY Down 1.38% -3

    Total score day 2:
    Monkeys     0
    Eagles     0

    Combined score after two days
    Monkeys     4
    Eagles     -4

I will have my picks in before midnight.  Captain Rich of the Eagles has posted his 6/3 picks in his post above.  If anyone else is interest in the 6/3 markets please let me know your three picks before midnight and what team you wish to play for.

    Later.

Probably sounding like a broken record here, but how do you guys read the charts to determine if something is going to rise up soon and what tools/websites do you use? Are your picks from a group of selected favorites or extensive research?

Trying to learn all this really hard and this little "battle" is getting me motivated so if you have any tips or even good links (maybe something you've discussed before), please help.

    Keep on trading!

For 6/3 I've got two of my previous picks and one new one:

    GLBL - Energy sector

    WDC - Tech

    QSII - Medical (information systems)

All three have done well vs the overall market the last couple months, but not too strong.  They should not be vulnerable to too big of a drop if the markets reverse.

Hey Solid Spike.  Rich A. Fluent can line you up with a number of sites that he uses regularily.  I will let him tell you what he recommends most strongly for sites or trade indicators.

I also use a number of technical indicators to narrow down my stock search.  I have modified the traditional technical formulations (MACD, RSI, EMA, etc....) in spreadsheets where I download data daily and run my screens.  I start with a very large number of stocks each week (about 800 this week) from recommendation lists put out by investors who are much smarter than I am.  I run my screens on them and narrow it down to 96 stocks to watch during the following week.  Those stocks are screened each day of the week and about a dozen are picked each day.  From that I look at their charts, compare them to their peers and the overall market... and come up with a few to watch closely the next day.  That is how I am getting the 3 stocks I am including each day in this forum and also how I have selected actual stocks for real life investments.

My goal is to beat the markets over the long term, not just chose a few high flyers for quick trades.  I am not able to watch the markets all day, so I want to make sure my actual investments are in good companies.

Re: Battle of the species - 3 picks - 1 day

Hey Solid Spike, it seems that my stock picking style is similar to my fellow marketeer Kelly. I like to invest in strong companies as well and I trade other stocks shorter term. I like to help out other investors by trying to identify companies that will see improved margins, earnings growth, and will most likely outperform the markets, check out my "Rich Picks" posts. I recommended stocks like COV, VAR, and BNI in the past couple of weeks.  The way I do it is to run screens for stocks in an uptrend, though most of my screened stocks come from the trading and charting software that I use provided by my brokerage TD Ameritrade (this is not a promotion lol).  One tool I use is Advanced Analyzer, which helps to point out a lot of indicators that matter to traders and investors (bullish or bearish crossovers, strong uptreding stocks, and so on). With the stocks I get from that program I then run it through my custom screen to identify the stocks that are trading at a price that seems aggreeable to short term traders and long term investors, based on the Guppy Multiple Moving Average, a combination of EMAs. (google this, it is a pretty useful tool). Other indicators I use on my charts are MACD(3,8,13), RSI, CCI, MFI, and Accumulation/Distribution. I also use several charts to analyze price performance over time, minute charts for intraday trades, 60 minute, daily, and monthly. Included with my charts are PSAR, stochastics, and most importantly volume. Anyway, check out my post on links that can help the average investor determine which stocks could make good investments. http://www.wallstreetsurvivor.com/CS/Forums/t/30241.aspx

SolidSpike: I usually watch the chart of the day from this site: http://www.thetechtrader.com/chartofday/ It was way over my head at first but I've come to grasp the concepts in short order. There are also great videos at Schaeffer's Research which show you how option activity can predict stock movements.
