Well, I don't really have any of those "frills" so I couldn't be a deadbeat.  I was a stay-at-home-mom for several years--great job indeed!

What about the family of 3 whose sole income is a minimum wage job? They are working.. why shouldnt they receive assistance? they need a little help to get by until they can do better...

then i guess they would not be on the computer in the middle of the day play wss.. if a person can play on a computer all day then they can get a job. every fast food restaurant is hiring . every hotel is hiring maids,  every hospital is hiring housekeeping. i was a supervisor at a hospital in charge of housekeeping. my shift that i oversaw was always 2 people short , we were starting people out at $9 an hour even with no expirence. if someone wants a job its out there.   

 I don't see anything wrong with helping those who truely are in need, but I've come across so many people who are ripping the tax payer off it's pathetic, I see everyday those who need help and are turned away and then those who have a lot and get more because they know how to work the system.

I have to much pride to ever take a welfare check or food stamps, I know because I've been there and refused to accept any because I knew I was able to make it myself. 

What really pisses me off is those who are living off the system and act like their crap doesn't stink, I personally know people who collect social security disability and have a business and run everything in there wives name, I know people who own a 350k home and yet are able to get state medicaid for there kids.

Here we have Whineandcheese who is trying to help herself and willing to learn to invest for her future and gets turned away for basic shelter. This is what needs to be fixed, we need to help those that need it, not those who know how to rip us off.

 Believe it or not, anyone who doesn't, but I did have a well-paying full-time job until health issues (such as heart rate problems and more) forced me to leave.  I hope to get back to work again soon.

majik i live in florida like you and i am sure you agree $9 hour is good money. if you can find a room mate and share the rent you can easily have a roof over your head. you might not live in a castle but you can have 3 hots and a cot. and its yours.

 After taxes, and besides food for one person and perhaps insurance, what about gas, electric, phone, transportation, personal hygeine supplies, laundry costs and supplies, medical expenses and prescriptions...as well as the additional expenses for two children, and their own needs?

 In Florida you can make it on 9.00 an hour, it's not easy but it can be done, Forida is one of the few places left that you can still survive on low wages.

i think peter is refering to people who take advantage of the system, those who pop out 5 kids knowing they can't afford them and get all the assistance, but those who are trying can't get squat. i understand where he is coming from

9.00 per hour = 18,720 a year which = 1560 a month.. take out 27% for taxes..(low estimate) = 1139.. lets say a 1 bedroom apt.. (here in texas) FMR (fair market rate) rate is about 450.  electric aprox 100 gas aprox 45 water aprox 50 less basic phone service (land line) 40 .. food... 140.. gasoline.. lets see.. i drive a kia.. live 5 miles from work.. i get out cheap..  nominal value though...200.. .. Insurance.. (liability only) 60.. ... hopefully my car is paid off or it would be repo'd about now.. health insurance.. (priceless) I mean.. lets see.. last job it was 36.87 per pay period... so 74 bucks.. expenses = 1159.. take home pay.. 1139.. hmmm... i see a problem..  this doesn't count.. medicine.. clothing.. please dont get a cavity.. anything else I forgot?

I'd rather work to help pay for an american 'deadbeat' family who needs a hand up any day...rather than send b-i-l-l-i-o-n-s of hard earned tax dollars to another country!

i don't mean to argue your point lorelie but your estimates are very high, i have a 3 bed room house and don't pay that much for gas and water, and if you are hard on your luck a phone is a luxury, my hubby drive about 15 miles to work one way and we don't spend 200 in gas, maybe 100 a month 20 a week, listen my first job when i was 18 i only made about 1200 a month and i made it, i had no phone, no cable, a small one bedroom, and ate as little as possible. in your example you have that person paying health care, well then get some birth controll because if you can't afford to have kids don't have em. there are really people who have fallen on hard time and they do need help but i don't believe in helping someone who won't even try to help themselves, the only luxury i was given my first car a 1991 ford escort, i was 18 in 1996.
