JAMESLT I THINK YOU ARE RIGHT BECAUSE ONCE YOU ARE IN PRISON YOU GET FREE MEDICAL.  WE DON'T HAVE THAT LUXURY. HAPPY 4TH OF JULY.

Free room & board, free medical, free education etc.

In the military About 1.5 million active duty. Since our population is over 300 million right now that's less than 1 percent of our population currently serving, active and reserves combined

In our prisons In December 2006, some 2.25 million persons were being held in the nearly 5,000 prisons and jails that are scattered across America’s urban and rural landscapes.

Hmmmm pretty big population sucking up the welfare in prison!

I think before we worry about fixing the cost of our military (which needs a bit of an overhaul) we should worry about cleaning out some prison cells the old fashion way!

i remember  hearing stories back in the 40's and 50's if you committed a crime and your sentence was say  3-5 years a judge would give you the options of going in the service. . back then judges had wisdom and common sense and figured the army just might give you some character and discipline. maybe we ought to try that again

They tried that up into the 70's and it didnt work well, so they stopped it, the ones that were in trouble and sent to the military only caused the same if not worse problems

I remember that program and I agree, they should try it again. There were problems, but the system helped. I heard a couple months ago that the prison system was thinking of releasing criminals with light sentences (or cutting the length of some sentences) to make room for criminals with more serious crimes because our prison system is so overcrowed. I think they should try the program again. But then, the taxpapers still lose, pay for them in jail or or pay for them to fight for our country.

The prisoners should have to work on something. I recently drove to Louisiana. Somewhere in AR or LA. I saw a group of prisoners (orange striped uniforms) cleaning up the Interstate. We need more of that.

That's what Sheriff Arpaio does.  He has good old fashioned chain gangs.

How about the politicians who are convicted of fraud that cost millions of dollars in taxes an we get to support them while they are  serving time all the while still paying taxes to pay their retirement checks they are still allowed to recieve and are often well over 100 thousand a year.

so you know im a military member and just for the record they dont cover everything when it comes to schooling they only cover the tuition but however will not cover the cost of books and supplies and medical is covered to a certian point. only up to certian procedures will be covered somethings the military wont cover although they do cover a very expensive one laser eye surgery is cover by military medical coverage

    Re: Welfare Program!

Prison is definately a second welfare system. Not to mention a recruiting station for gangs, and an education system for furthering criminal education. Many cons state that prison was no deterrent for them in whether they would start a life of crime or not, and once released most go back to crime. It is a life of convenience, meals, showers, medical care, books, tv, movies, and even conjugal visits. You can thank the ACLU and the liberal left for the easy life that inmates live.

Windbreaker, sad but true. I wish we would go back to the peanalize and prevent criminal justice  policies, instead of our current rehabilitae (failed) system.
