Rush Limbaugh signs deal worth $400 Million through 2016

Talk-radio pundit Rush Limbaugh renewed his contract with his syndication company today, signing an eight-year deal that Limbaugh said is worth more than $400 million, including a $100 million signing bonus.

The lucrative deal between Limbaugh and Clear Channel-owned Premiere Radio Networks is the second-largest ever for a radio personality, ranking behind Howard Stern's five-year agreement with Sirius Satellite Radio in 2004 that netted Stern more than $500 million.

For 20 years, Limbaugh, 57, has been the most popular personality on talk radio, and he is a formidable force in political circles. His program (heard weekday afternoons in Washington on WMAL 630 AM) commands a weekly audience of nearly 20 million listeners on 600 stations, according to Premiere, which markets his program to stations and advertisers.

Terms of Limbaugh's renewal weren't disclosed by Premiere in announcing Limbaugh's renewal. But the conservative pundit, in an upcoming article in the New York Times, said he would earn about $38 million annually under the deal, in addition to a "nine-figure" signing bonus.

I am just curious what your thoughts are on this, since he is a big talk show host on the Conservative/Republican side of the political spectrum (and has been very popular to the Conservative/Republicans) for many, many years, especially now in a very important election year, when the race for the White House is fierce between the Democratic and Republican candidates, Barack Obama and John McCain respectively.

And please, no name-calling or insults allowed on this thread, no matter what your political views are. Thanks.

Big, thanks for the info. I guess we now will have another Bill Gates love affair??

It is my opinion (I must repeat OPINION) that that is too much money for anyone. And I also think that movie/TV/radio stars, CEO's, sports figures are equally overpaid.

But I also know that these people got market rates for their business/professional services. I'm quite sure they are not offered 10M over market rates. (oh yeah you're a goog guy/gal, so how would you like 10M more than our numbers show?) I know that a bean pusher somewhere (not you Dr. Zira)  showed the decision makers how these people will make money for their respective owners/stock holders at the salaries they are offered.

It really is none of our business. And our OPINIONS are just that, but always worth discussing.       I should add envy to the "how to create a weakened society" post.

Thats a ridiculous sum of money for anyone on the radio doing that and anyone else for that matter, especially for someone like him who usually has his facts wrong and or twists them to fit his argument. Once in a great while he actually gets something right, which is a shock.

I thought clear channel was having money problems.

JamesLT, I'm surprised. I think you two have more than a few things in common.

I don't think any body can earn "too much."  Rush has done a lot to earn that money.  He kept the AM radio band alive.  He spawned a whole talk radio industry.  Good for him!  He wouldn't be getting that kind of money if he didn't provide value for his service.

I like to listen to him, but I haven't been able to since I started my new job about a month ago (no radio at work).  I agree with most of what he says, and he does it in an entertaining way.

    Have fun with this one.

    Breaking news story:

    Jun 26, 2006 7:52 pm US/Eastern

    Limbaugh Detained At Airport

(CBS4 News) WEST PALM BEACH Sources have confirmed to CBS4 News that conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh has been detained at Palm Beach International Airport for the possible possession of illegal prescription drugs Monday evening.

Limbaugh was returning on a flight from the Dominican Republic when officials found the drugs, among them Viagra.

Limbaugh entered a plea deal back in April in a previous case where his charge of fraud to conceal information to obtain prescriptions was dropped under the condition he continue undergoing treatment for addiction.

Limbaugh had admitted to being addicted to pain killers on his radio program and had entered a rehabilitation program prior to that arrest.

I guess Limbaugh must think drug laws are for the little people.

Supposedly he got hooked on painkillers on account of having a bad back, though given the quantities he was caught procuring, last time around, one has to wonder whether there wasn’t some recreational aspect to it. Or perhaps, since he’s now smuggling Viagra, his back has improved.

    Just a thought.

Update: Apparently what happened was that Limbaugh’s Viagra prescription had been written by one doctor to another doctor, rather than to Limbaugh, supposedly to protect Limbaugh’s privacy. Hogwash, say I. Doing that is at minimum a second degree misdemeanor violation. It’s not a standard procedure, no matter how embarrassing one’s prescription.

But since Limbaugh got the drugs in the U.S., here’s another question: what was he doing in the Dominican Republic for which he needed that Viagra prescription he didn’t want anyone to know about?

     ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

I was wrong . I guess the Rabid Right does have sex.

    Carpe Diem.!!

Seti03, OK you got him. And he was disciplined then in 2006 (by himself mostly..if I remember right). You know that guy must do a lot of things right to have something he did 2 years ago be such a big deal. And if this situation is attacked so vehemently, why isn't what he says challenged??

    Maybe the right is right.
