Battle of the species - 3 picks - 1 day

I've been reading a number of the forums on here and I haven't seen many posts where individuals are actually identifying the investments that they believe will provide strong returns. I think it is time for a challenge.

The rules are simple. Pick three stocks before midnight to be included in the following trading day. The one day returns (close vs. the previous day's close) will be ranked and posted here. Comments on your stock selections would be appreciated as this is intended to be a learning experience for our fellow investors and traders.

I will start as a representative of the "Monkey" species with the following three stocks for Monday June 1st:

GLBL - - Global Industries - the energy sector is hot right now

BTU - Peabody Energy - coal stock with strong potential

WDC - Western Digital - a strong tech stock in a rebounding market

If you've got three better ideas and you think you can outsmart the "Monkey" species, post them here. Winner takes all the bananas.

My Mutual Fund

Mutual fund managers make like a zillion dollars every year selecting stocks for portfolios that usually have a difficult time beating the general stock market. I believe that with a basic understanding of the stock market and some research in selecting a diversified portfolio of investments, non-professionals can be as successful as these highly compensated individuals.

On this thread I am checking if anyone is interested in posting what their portfolio would include if they were running a mutual fund.

Here are the criteria: Pick between 50 and 100 stocks, ETFs, or funds (long positions only) before the end of the day on Sunday. Those picks will be tracked for one week and compared to the general stock market and reported on a regular basis. No trades can be made during the week. This will be repeated each week.

Anyone interested in trying to beat the professionals?

One Way to Play a Down Day??

Today I was home sick and bored so around noon (AZ time) the markets seemed to stabilize a little. I thought, why not run a screen looking for some stocks to buy on a dip?

Basically I looked for stocks that were 5% or more down for the day with strong growth and/or earnings, and a future PE below 20. I came up with: HPJ, ORCC, UNTD, SB, GRRF, VCI, EJ, TTES and GNK.

The Results:
HPJ – 7.08%
ORCC – 2.1%
UNTD – 1.3%
SB – 0.89%
GRRF – 0.5%
VCI – (0.67%)
EJ – (1.29%)
TTES – (1.36%)
GNK – (2.3%)

Overall return (from noon) was 0.69% for the day compared to the markets 0.17% and a tidy little $1341.17 profit on a down day . I’ll hold them now for a while just to see how they do over the next week or two.

This is like the A to Z game . Find a stock symbol and tell what the name of the stock is and a little info on that stock . I will start ......... ABX Is the symbol for Barrick Gold corp . This is a gold stock and is low risk to buy when oil is up , the USD is down and it is best to buy for the next 3 months , but I would not buy gold stocks after DEC 30th . They tank in January most of the time . The next symbol should start with B .

CIT and resetting my account

"They" reset my account yesterday to square one wiping out all my stocks etc... Today I log in there are all my stocks again just like monday. Problem? Yesterday was the last day I could get rid of CIT now I have $21,000 in and it tells me the stock no longer exists.

3X ETFs - 3 X the fun

Ever since Direxion launched their triple leveraged ETFs there have been financial pundits arguing that these investment products are not suitable for individual investors. It seems funny to me that these same people who have used extensive amounts of leverage in buying and shorting stocks on margin in the past are now concerned that individual investors have easy access to highly leveraged products. The Direxion ETFs have become extremely popular and they now have 11 different triple leveraged products that are long the markets and 11 more that are short the markets.

When used in moderation and held for short periods of time, these investments can provide a boost to a portfolio. On the other hand, they can also do great damage if held too long or when the markets are not going in your favor.

Regardless of all the warnings, I still find the 3X ETFs to be quite interesting and worth taking an occassional gamble.

At the close last Thursday a sell signal popped up on TYH (Tech Bull 3X). This was based on 5 day market moves amongst the different 3X ETFs. To play this, I would buy TYP (Tech Bear 3X) and offset it with EDC (Emerging Markets Bull 3X ETF) at the close on Thursday. This combination gained an average 13.5% 5 day profit the last eight times there was a short term (5 day) sell signal on TYH. I would hold this for 5 days maximum or until the end of any earlier day if a 10% gain can be realized.

Through Friday TYP gained 1.4% and EDC gained 1.09%. That's a combined 1.245% gain compared to the market dropping .64%. Almost 2% better than the market. Again, this is a short term play and should only be held through Thursday at the latest.

What happened to 'FUEL' and 'FNSR'

Can you be somewhat shaky about a stock that still moved up nearly 40% for the year? While I am still bullish on this stock because of its almost-monopoly style stranglehold it has on the DVD rental business, there have been signs of weakness in the stock.

Technical-wise Netflix looks to be funneling in for a possible breakout up or down. At its current point a move pass $42.50 should be good for the stock.

Starting a little trading blog

Can Altria Raise Dividend Indefinitely? (MO, PM, RAI, LO)

Some companies are unmatched on the rate at which they pay out their dividends. Former DJIA component Altria Group, Inc. (NYSE: MO) definitely falls into that category, as do many tobacco sector peers. Today came the announcement that it is increasing its quarterly dividend by over 6% to $0.34 per share of common stock per quarter. The prior quarterly dividend rate was $0.32 per quarter. At an annualized rate of $1.36 per share and with shares at $18.15, this generates a yield right at 7.5% per year. The risk-free yield of the comparable Treasury is about 0.44% and the average yield of all S&P 500 stocks is roughly 1.88%. What we are curious about is how long through time Altria can keep paying dividend rates of this magnitude….

Where do people think Ford stands (as a company and as an investment) now that the auto bailout looks like a no-go? Ford declined the proposed money saying they would be ok, so what happens if GM and Chrysler go under? Do they drag down Ford, or will Ford prosper with less competition?

Dont sleep on Motorola (MOT), they are in alot more industries than cell phones. They provide alot of the cable industries backbone and customer equipment. I believe Motorola is a great growth opportunity, also Arris (ARRS) is another telco growth company.
