Here is a snippet from an article at minyanvil(?)...ya know the Motley Fool thing...on Salix
Salix Pharmaceuticals (SLXP) topped the list for the most revenue growth in
2010. The company, which specializes in drugs for the treatment of
gastrointestinal problems, had 29% sales growth from 2008 to 2009, and
the data shows that its sales could continue to grow as much as 46% in
2010 to $338 million. The growth will likely be driven by its Xifaxan.
The drug is currently approved for traveler’s diarrhea, but the company
is hoping it will also get approval for its use as a treatment for
hepatic encephalopathy. The FDA is expected to make a decision by March
24.
As I mentioned below I have personally witnessed what this drug does for those with Hepatic Encephalopathy...It is a Wonder! I think this article seriously underestimates the sales potential for this drug...Once you see the difference it makes on the patient virtually overnite and then the side benefit of stopping the laxative treatments this drug really improves quality of life! It is expensive...but worth every penny...The person I know who took this drug went from not remembering what day it was to being able to drive again!...The drug has been being used for over 25 years so it is not likely to present any new side effects...although it is possible since this treatment is ongoing and the previous usage was a temporary dosage...It does seem to cause Ear Pain in some patients and the person I know did experience some of this...but yes I am certainly holding SLXP and intend to for probably at least 3 years...of course it is likely to be bought as this drug really takes off!..
If the CDC finds that we are infected with MAP virus this drug is a likely candidate to be used to fight this infection...Which would dramatically expand the potential customer base...Keep an eye on this one...
I wonder why they don't give this antibiotic to Cattle to prevent the E-coli infections in the First Place....Hmm...I will have to look into that...seems like another huge market possibility...
