This country was founded on religious principles, why not. If not a stated prayer , then at least a few minutes of silence for individuals who do want to pray in their own way.

I like your answer Irishgreek.  I dont think it should be mandatory (like it was when I was in school) but if kids want to then let them, I dont think they should be stigmatized or made fun of if they choose to do it on their own.

Why set any time aside for this purpose?  Children are at school to learn, not pray.  They can do it before, during or after … whenever they want ... privately.

I don't think there should be a prayer hour, but a few minutes of silent time to address it if you wish. But there definately shoud be no bans, put downs, or negative connotations if "anyone" wishes to indulge.

    Thanks for voting.............

Why not allow prayer? If the schools are only "government indoctrination centers" anyway, what would a little prayer hurt? Not forcing everyone to pray, but allowing those who want to pray to do so without retribution.

I think this is a great poll. It always surprises me how some people react to the idea of allowing prayer back into schools. Why is that concept so scary, especially to people who don't believe in God? Why is O.K. to bannish God from the public sector because that is what they want, but it is so frightening to allow those who do believe in God a moment to pray.

God forbid [no pun intended] kids should be given a choice for a few minutes each morning with their own time. There not learning much now, so it sure couldn't hurt. I BET YOU WOULDN'T MIND PASSING OUT FLYERS TO THEM FOR RON PAUL DURING THAT TIME, SO THEY COULD TAKE THEM HOME TO THEIR PARENTS. I GUESS YOU WOULD CONSIDER THAT A LEARNING EXPERIENCE , RIGHT.

Genius, for the first time they will learn something about freedom, liberty, privacy and prosperity.

I remember time before the ACLU, when everything didn't offend somebody.

I said the Pledge of Allegiance in school without fear that the police were going to burst down the doors because I said 'God' in the hallowed walls of my classroom. And wow I turned out to be an educated well rounded person who has a sense of morality and respect for others (even for those who think God doesn't belong...anywhere)

That's the best response I've seen on this topic. You couldn't be more right.

Re: Should Schools Be Allowed To Have Prayer?

My, how things have changed. In my day we had prayer in our schoolroom before lunch. Anyone that did't want to pray did not have to. Now let's look at an incident in Texas in 1995. Prior to their graduation a group of students in Galveston County decided by a majority that they woul like a graduation prayer in the ceremony. Enter Judge Samuel B. Kent of the U.S. District court for the Southern Districk of Texas. Judge Kent ruled that any student mentioning the name of Jesus in a graduation prayer would be senteneced to a six month jail term!

The following are the judge's own words, taken directly from court papers dated May5, 1995:

And make no mistake. the court is going to have a United States in attendence at the graduation. If any studentoffends this court, that student will be summarily arrest and will face up to six months incarceration in the Galveston County Jail for contempt of court. Anyone who thinks I'm kidding about this order.........{o} expressing any weakness or lack of resolve in that spirit of compromise would better think again. Anyone who violates these orders , no kidding, is going to wish that he or she had died as a child when this court gets through with it!*  *Brannon House, "The People and Agenda of Multicultural Education,"  Undestandig the times(January 1997): 3.

It is my understanding that this class was apx. 200 students in size. I forget the actual numbers, but it was something like 197 for prayer and 3 against.
